The tour includes:
Papafragkas cave (quick historical overview about the village of Phylacopi, but without entering the archaeological site)
Sarakiniko beach (30-minute visit)
Plaka (walk in the traditional alleys)
Catacombs, the discovery site of the Venus de Milo, ruins of the ancient town of Klima, ancient theater (1-1,5hr stop, including a visit to the Catacombs).
Klima fishing village.
Swim in Palaiochori or Provatas (2,5 hours stop for swimming & water sports) – Beach is organized with beach bars, to enjoy any snacks/refreshments.
Itinerary
From 10.00hrs to 18.00hrs
A special full-day tour to discover the incredible volcanic island of Milos, one of the most beautiful places on earth. First stop the cave of Papafragkas, a cluster of deep-sea inlets and sea caves, located at the base of a pristine ravine and which, like Sarakiniko, was shaped by volcanic activity. We will wander for a short while at this picturesque location, where you can look down into the clear turquoise waters and watch some rather adventurous tourists swim and snorkel in the caves at the bottom of the ravine.
Milos played a crucial part in the pre-history of the Cyclades, and especially Phylacopi, located next to Papafragkas cave. Phylacopi was a settlement dating back to the Neolithic Period (approximately 9000 to 4000 BC) and remained an active settlement until 1000 BC. While excavating the site in the late 1890s, British archeologists discovered tools made from obsidian, a volcanic glass similar to granite. From Papafragkas, we can witness the wall remains of the city, and our guide will have a chance to give information and the history of Phylacopi. During this tour, we will NOT enter the archeological site.
We will continue our drive along the eye-catching north coastline, towards Sarakiniko, an inlet of pure white stone sculpted by volcanic eruptions. This beautiful, out-of-this-world spot is one of the island’s many geological wonders and perhaps one of the most photographed places in the Cyclades. We will take a walk down the inlet so you can experience this one-of-a-kind beach, take photographs and feel as if you’ve landed on the moon.
From there, we will travel the picturesque road along the coast towards Plaka and its cobbled streets and alleys. Plaka is a traditional Cycladic village with white stone houses and bougainvillea flowers, 250 meters above the Aegean. We will walk through the village to admire its traditional architecture and its stunning view over the bay of Adamas, and we will taste some homemade desserts at the village’s local pastry shops.
Just 300 meters off the village of Trypiti lay the early Christian Catacombs, which are the largest in Greece, and the ruins of the ancient city of Klima. Right next to the Catacombs lays the ancient marble amphitheater, built during the Hellenistic Age, with an original capacity of 7,000 spectators. There are still seven intact seat rows and there is a lovely view of the bay. On the way from the Catacombs to the theatre, we shall also visit the site where Venus de Milo was discovered in 1820 (now residing in the Louvre in Paris).
During our tour, we will enter the archaeological site of the Catacombs (15mins visit).
The port of the ancient city of Milos is today the fishing village of Klima, which is our next stop. The houses are called Syrma, the Greek word that means wire rope. This wire rope is used to get boats out of the water and put them into the house, like a modern garage. The colorful doors and the promenade create an image that summarizes the essence of a Greek island!
After the impressive sightseeing part, it is time to indulge in a cool swim and drinks in the crystal waters of Palaiochori or Provatas beach. Each beach offers changing facilities, beach bars, restaurants and water sports (in Palaiochori). There is free time for swimming and sunbathing. Both beaches are located on the south side of the island, so they are mostly protected by the north Aegean Sea wind of the summer (Meltemi).
