Communicating in Greece will be very easy even if your level of English is not very good. Most of the population speaks Greek and another language and is accustomed to dealing with tourists and will help you in whatever you need. In addition, most of the country address signs can be read in both Greek and Latin alphabet.
In Greece you will not be hungry! At all hours through the day, most establishments are open and there are those who serve food during the night until the early hours of the morning.
The climate in Greece is Mediterranean with more than 260 days of sunshine through the year. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit both the islands and the mainland, the temperatures are very pleasant not too hot and the days are long. The summer although it is hot it is the best time to know the islands and the coast, to enjoy the beach and activities in the sea.
It is very important to know if on the dates you travel through Greece there is a celebration of the popular festivals the so called “panigiria”. The mixture of orthodox worship with pagan celebrations, coming from the antiquity, is taking place at the end of the day. Legends, spells, rites and superstitions have a true reflection still in the rural areas and are reflected in the popular festivals. Folk dances are colorful and lively. If you have an opportunity, do not miss any of these celebrations. The dances, the music, the wine, the food and especially the company of the Greeks are fantastic.
The most important thing to bring with you is the sunscreen, sunglasses and a cap to protect you from the sun. The clothes have to be light and the shoes comfortable.
If you travel during the summer the bathing suit and the flip-flops for the beach are essential. If you plan to travel to the islands by ferry it is best to bring anti-dizziness pills in your backpack. Many times the wind is strong and many trips last quite long. For the afternoons it is advisable to carry mosquito repellents and a scarf or jacket for the nights in the islands that is getting a little bit chilly.
