Day 1: Athens – Dimitsana – Hike through Lousios gorge
On day 1, we meet at the designated meeting point in Athens, where you are met and welcomed by our team. The tour leader briefly explains the program of the coming days and we board our minibus with direction to the picturesque mountainous village of Dimitsana, located at 1.000m altitude, the cradle of the War of Independence against the Turkish in 1821.
(approx. 3 hrs driving distance)
Upon arrival in Dimitsana, we will set off for an exciting hiking route through the impressive Lousios gorge. This area is one of the most beautiful in the Peloponnese, as it combines dense nature with a great history. Starting from the new monastery of Philosophou, we will hike to the Old Philosophou monastery, literally hanging from the cliffs. In the Old monastery, we will also visit the “Secret School” (krifo scholio), hidden inside the monastery, which, as indicated by its name, used to serve as a school during the Turkish occupation.
A descending trail reaching the riverside will then take us to Prodromou monastery. Once there, we’ll take a break for coffee and a snack.
We will then continue towards the Ancient Gortys and the Temple of Asclepius, built in the 4th BC century, where our hiking ends. You are free to visit the archaeological site before we board our minibus.
Our next stop is the picturesque small village of Stemnitsa, where we will stop for coffee and relaxation. In the afternoon, we will head back to Dimitsana and visit the open-air Water Power museum where we’ll find out how the power of water was used in the traditional, pre-industrial societies, for the production of various goods.
Check-in at the hotel and free time to relax or walk around the narrow paved streets of the village and admire the magnificent views over Lousios gorge.
Dinner at a local restaurant
(Hike duration approx. 3 hrs / 9km).
Day 2: Rafting in Lousios river – Athens
This morning prepare yourselves for a wonderful rafting adventure in one of the best rivers for rafting in Greece! We’ll be transferred to the base of our operations, near the village of Karitaina. There, before we start rafting, you will have the chance to experience rappel from the 45m high Karitaina bridge! It’s absolutely fun and safe for everyone. Then, our local instructors will give you all the necessary instructions and equipment, before we board our rafting boats
(total activity duration: approx. 4 hrs, in the water: 2hrs).
Once our adventure ends, we’ll head to a beautiful farm in Karitaina, where we will have lunch and relax.
Around 17:30 – 18:00, we will depart for our return trip to Athens.
